Sleep Disorders

Sleep deprivation can disrupt the normal functioning of the brain and body. A lack of sleep has the ability to affect your mood, focus, memory and other important cognitive functions. So, if you experience a change in the way that you sleep due to a sleep disorder, it can affect your overall health, safety and quality of life.

There are many different types of sleep disorders, but they are usually grouped into categories based on why they happen and how they affect you.

Common sleep disorders

  • Insomnia - you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep during the night
  • Sleep apnea - you experience abnormal patterns in breathing while asleep
  • Restless leg syndrome - this is a type of sleep movement disorder which causes an uncomfortable sensation or urge to move your legs while trying to sleep
  • Narcolepsy - a condition that makes an individual feel extremely sleepy during the day or actually falling asleep suddenly during the day

Symptoms of sleep disorders

  • Being very sleepy during the day but having trouble falling asleep at night
  • Falling asleep at inappropriate times
  • Breathing in an unusual pattern while trying to sleep
  • Experiencing an uncomfortable urge to move while falling asleep
  • Having an irregular sleep and wake cycle

Sleep disorders can normally be treated effectively once they have been diagnosed by a doctor.
